Why do we use Makaton here?
Makaton is used here at Brougham Street to support communication development, particularly for children who may have language delays or additional needs. It combines speech with signs and symbols, helping children to understand and express themselves more effectively. All of our staff members are fluent in Makaton and the use of visual signs to support communication is fully embedded into the daily practices here.
Here are some of the Key Reasons that we use Makaton:
- Supports Communication- Makaton helps children who are not yet able to use verbal language to communicate by using signs and symbols, fostering early communication skills.
- Enhances Understanding- It supports children's understanding of the spoken language, especially for those with learning difficulties, autism or speech and language delays.
- Increases Confidence- Children are often more confident in expressing their needs and emotions when they can use Makaton signs, reducing any frustration that is caused.
- Promotes Inclusivity- It allows children with various abilities to interact more easily with their peers and adults, creating a more inclusive environment.
- Supports Speech Development- While Makaton focuses on signs, it also supports the development of spoken language by reinforcing the connection between words and their meanings.
- Encourages Social Interaction- It helps children to communicate more effectively with others, improving social skills and interactions.
By using Makaton, early years educators can ensure that all children, regardless of their abilities, have a means to communicate and engage in learning.
Pauline, who is based in our toddler room has a real passion for Makaton. Here she is below, signing some of the favourite Nursery Rhymes that we like to sing here at Brougham Street.
